Company Visit: Bernd Westphal at KSM in Hildesheim
Hildesheim, December 9th: The chairman of the KSM work council, Manuel Duarte, invited Bernd Westphal, member of the SPD in the German Bundestag, to the site of the KSM Castings Group in Hildesheim.
Apart from Duarte, Westphal was accompanied by the two plant managers Dr. Klaus Greven and Joachim Heußmann. Within the scope of an extensive plant tour which also included all production facilities, he also visited the company training center and kept up to date about the latest technological developments at KSM.
A special subject of the visit was the activity of the company in the field of E-mobility. The KSM Castings Group will produce safety critical chassis components for the SUV of a premium OEM. KSM has also developed this component with regard to the castability and has now started the preparation for the series production. Currently the necessary toolings are produced and the production units are adjusted to the requirements of the new products.
The complexity and the size of these new parts as well as the high demands for the crash behavior are a special challenge. "This means that we have to secure a state of the art technology, especially for x-ray testing. Only then is it possible to guarantee a processs reliable production of components that are free from any defects", stated Dr. Klaus Greven. He is plant manager for the Plant II in HIldesheim and thus responsible for the forthcoming series production of the front axle components of the premium SUV. The chassis components will be produced in the gravity die castings process and also be machined by KSM.
However, this is not the only news from the E-mobility sector. The KSM Castings Group develops and produces prototypes for the car manufacturer Tesla in the low pressure sand casting process. "We have many inquiries from the E-mobility sector and we strongly push forward this development", confirmed Manuel Duarte.
In addition, Westphal was really impressed when visiting the highly equipped company training center of the KSM apprentices. Apart from learning about this year's Christmas project of the apprentices, he met the first female foundry mechanic in the in the KSM company history. Lisa Marie Brömer started her training as foundry mechanic at KSM in August 2016.
